They also did not have a sense of personal identity or individuality that was tied to their age. Instead, they identified themselves by their family, clan, tribe, or community. They measured their life stages by events such as puberty, marriage, childbirth, or death.
This changed in the modern era when people became more aware of time and its passing in their lives. The invention of clocks and watches made it possible to know the exact hour and minute of the day. The development of factories, railways, and schools imposed a regular schedule and rhythm on people’s activities. The emergence of medicine, science, and education increased people’s life expectancy and health awareness. The growth of capitalism, democracy, and consumerism created new opportunities and challenges for people to pursue their personal goals and interests.
As a result, people started to celebrate their birthdays as a way of marking their individuality, identity, and achievements. They also started to give gifts to each other as a sign of affection, gratitude, or social status. Children’s birthday parties became especially popular as parents invested more in their upbringing and education. Different cultures adopted or adapted various traditions and customs for celebrating birthdays, such as cakes, candles, songs, games, cards, or wishes.
Today, birthdays are widely recognized and celebrated around the world. They are often seen as a special occasion to express one’s personality and preferences. They are also used as a reference point for legal rights and responsibilities, such as voting, driving, drinking, or marrying. However, some people may choose not to celebrate their birthdays for religious or personal reasons. Some may also prefer to celebrate other milestones in their lives, such as anniversaries or achievements.
