The Moon Landing Part 1
The moon landing is one of the most remarkable achievements in human history. It refers to the arrival of a spacecraft on the surface of the moon, either with or without humans on board. The first human-made object to touch the moon was the Soviet Union’s Luna 2, on 13 September 1959 1. The first humans to land on the moon were American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, on 20 July 1969 2. They were part of the Apollo 11 mission, which was the culmination of a decade-long effort by the United States to reach the moon before the Soviet Union 2.
The Apollo 11 mission involved three astronauts: Armstrong, Aldrin and Michael Collins. Collins stayed in orbit around the moon while Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the lunar surface in a module called Eagle. They spent about two hours outside the module, collecting rocks, planting a flag and talking to President Richard Nixon via radio. Armstrong famously said, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” as he stepped out of the module 2.
The Apollo 11 mission was followed by five more successful manned moon landings, the last one being Apollo 17 in December 1972. Since then, no humans have visited the moon, although several robotic missions have been sent to explore its surface and environment. The most recent one was China’s Chang’e 4, which made the first landing on the far side of the moon in January 2019 1.
The moon landing is widely regarded as a milestone in scientific and technological progress, as well as a symbol of human curiosity and exploration. However, some people have doubted its authenticity and claimed that it was staged or faked by NASA or other agencies. These conspiracy theories have been debunked by various sources of evidence, such as photographs, videos, rock samples, eyewitness accounts and independent analyses 34.

If that wasn't enough Here are some interesting facts that you might not know 12:
- The moon has a distinctive smell. The astronauts reported that the lunar soil smelled like wet fireplace ashes or fireworks after they repressurized the module 1.
- JFK was more interested in beating the Soviets than in exploring space. He admitted in a secret tape that he was not that interested in space, but he wanted to win the Cold War 1.
- The Soviets tried to land on the moon first, but they failed and covered up their efforts. They launched several unmanned probes, but none of them reached the surface intact 1.
- The Apollo 11 mission cost about $25 billion in today’s dollars. That’s equivalent to about $150 million per minute of moonwalk time 2.
- The astronauts left various items on the moon, such as a flag, a plaque, a golf ball, a feather, and some personal belongings. They also left behind some trash, such as urine bags, food wrappers, and tools 23.
